good product

I wanted something that could support online gaming (World of Warcraft) as well as be able to do other things at the same time without lagging. Granted alot of the other parts must also be capable or it wont matter. I am pleased to say that i am running a bunch of applications and still no lag. Also downloading time appears to be almost cut in half compared to my intel centrino laptop. Installing it was really easy too. So far no problems whatsover.

Got the printer on time as described, and it is in good condition. Software installed fast and easy and connected to my wireless network with no problem. I ordered it from Yellow Deals because the printer was only $50 (roughly). My first personal printer and for $50 why not right? The reason it is so cheap is partially because it’s re-manufactured and also because it comes with no ink cartridge, which IS stated in their description so just read and beware. The ink cartridge can be bought on here, HP also re-manufactured for $18. So all together about $75 for a $120-$180 printer. Did I mention the Wifi works like a charm?

REMARKETED, REFURBISHED–GOOD PRODUCT!

If you’re like me, you read a lot of reviews and were hesitant to buy anything labeled “Remarketed,” “Refurbished,” or “Remanufactured,” and you have a techie friend who advises you vehemently to “stay away from that stuff”. Don’t be afraid, give it a try. I did, and I wasn’t disappointed. This printer is packaged and looks like brand new… setup is EZ, includes everything but toner (better than I expected for $59). I have connected and used the HP P1102w both wired and wirelessly, and it works reliably either way. Print quality is outstanding, what you expect from HP, and you will not believe how fast this guy cranks out pages. Get one while you can!

Battery Life Completely Mistrepresented

The performance is about what you would expect for such a underpowered AMD chipset – Adequate. But, this isn’t why I purchased the laptop. I purchased it for the promised 9.5 hours. Actually, I purchased 2 of these 3105m’s. We are lucky to get 2.5 to 3.0 hours out of the laptops IF the screens are turned down so low that they are barely visible. There is no way to get anything close to 9 hours of even moderate to light use out of this laptop. I would not have purchased this laptop if I had known the actual battery life.

Saved Me When My Desktop Went Down

My 2-week old desktop wouldn’t come out of sleep mode one day so I had to use the Hp 3105m while my custom desktop was sent back to the vendor. It took 4 weeks before I got it back so in the meantime I hooked up my monitor and wireless keyboard & mouse to the HP 3105m and I was off to the races. It wasn’t as fast as my 4x desktop w/8GB memory & 128GB SSD2 but, hey, it was more than I anticipated and is NOT a 3.52 pound weakling.

Now I’m waiting on the arrival of my new HP 3115m w/2x E-450 & Radeon 6320 GPU, 4GB memory & Win7 Pro 64bit. It s/b here in a day or 2 (3/5 or 3/6/2012) and I’m expecting even more out of it now. I think I might even put an SSD2 in it.

The last AMD notebook I had was a 33MHz 386. I had an Intel 25MHZ 386 at the same time and I’ve used Intel most of my life but I’m a die-hard AMD fan now. APUs rule.

Not as advertised

This item is not at all as it was described. The description says, “Dell Optiplex Gx620 Desktop 3.0GHz CPU (LGA 775 800FSB-2MB Cache) 64 Bit Technology, Ultra Powerful CPU, 2GB DDR2 Memory, Super Fast 160GB SATA HDD, Intregrated Nic/Audio, Wireless Capable, Dell XP Professional Restore Disk Included.”

The system I received is in fact a Dell Optiplex 620, but it has a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 (which is not 64-bit capable), 32-bit Windows XP, only 1GB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, no wireless, and no restore disk. There was a loose screw rolling around in the case.

When you buy a refurbished computer from Dell, it comes in a Dell box and includes everything that comes with a new computer. This computer was packed loose in a box with no keyboard or mouse, not even a power cord.

I think this computer is used, not refurbished.

Let’s have some truth in advertising.

Oh yeah, and it got sent to the wrong house. Can anyone say incompetence?

This is a fully capable Dell machine for running any office or high end software suite. These are business class machines designed with rigid framework. These machines can run any high end game with the addition of a low cost video card.

When purchasing on Amazon or any online retail site it is extremely important to view the exact specifications of the product. Unfortunately sellers do substitute their own variation of the product absent of the title. The specs should be listed in the seller description of the product.

Above all purchase only from a seller with respectable feedback. Feedback is a powerful resource given to shoppers and reputable sellers value and work extremely hard to satisfy customers for the all important positive feedback.

Good IT Stuff Cheap

I had a PC, family machine for e-mail, kid-duty games, with a nice old HP laserjet that won’t run with a Windows 7 environment. The motherboard fried. I needed a replacement XP machine.
This used Dell Optiplex with XP was a screamer a few years ago; it runs all the typical MS 2007 applications very fast. It also has plenty of USB ports, which is necessary:
The Dell Optiplex is a small form-factor box, additional boards for wireless networking, etc. don’t fit, but no matter just plug in a new wireless NIC into a USB port like a thumb drive. I run the old hard drive in a box that ALSO plugs into a USB port. Systems integration: done.
The company that provided it did a nice cleaning and packaging job, shipper just left it on the grass, but again for $200 I’m very happy.

WD admits there is a firewire “technical limitation.”

I have been using the WD Studio II 2TB on my 2008 iMac OSX 10.5.6 for two weeks. Connection: firewire 800. Today, it did not mount when I booted the computer.
Checked the WD Website Knowledge Base.

Discovered two things:

1. Knowledge Base Answer 1697: “This issue is caused by the external hard drive’s built in auto on/off functionality not correctly receiving a command from the computer system to wake from a power saver mode.”

Why does the auto on/off functionality not correctly receive the command from the computer system? WD goes on to suggest installing their WD Drive Manager.
Well, WD Drive Manager is already installed, how else could a user have arrived at this impasse to begin with?
And then they suggest to dismount the drive. How do you dismount an unmounted drive?

2. Knowledge Base Answer 1680: “This is an technical limitation between the FireWire interfaces on the Macintosh computer and the external hard drive.”

By “the external hard drive” WD means THEIR brand of external hard drive. I have never had this specific problem with any other brands of external hard drives connected to my Macintosh computer.
When is WD going to fix this “technical limitation” that they have built into their Studio II external hard drive? I would say, that is a pretty serious “technical limitation.”
1680 goes on to explain the workaround solution, essentially a routine disconnecting the power cable and reconnecting. Nice.

My hope is that this entire situation is the result of following the apparently misleading instructions shown in the Studio II manual: chapter 7, “Turning Off/Disconnecting the Device.”
Since “Auto-off” is the first entry in this chapter, it leads the user to believe that this is the preferred way to operate the drive. Guess not: as it turns out, the hidden “technical limitation” of the firewire connection will eventually cause the problem I have described. I suppose I can’t rely on “Auto-off.” Use “Safe Shutdown” only, even though the instructions in the manual differ from the instructions presented in WD Knowledge Base Answer 976!
And, speaking of conflicting instructions, compare WD Knowledge Base Answer 1386 with the Auto-off instructions in the manual.

Based on all of this information from WD, conflicting and otherwise, my guess is that the Auto-off feature is problematic (at least with Macintosh computers) because of firewire “technical limitations” caused by the WD external drive design. This fact, if it is a fact, should be expressed clearly in the manual.

Not best for Intel Macs

I purchased this drive to go along with my intel mac. I was previously a happy lacie owner, but since WD came in at such a great price and was listed as great with macs, I went for it.

What a mistake. For the first month, it worked well… a bit slower than my lacie, but still worked. Then, all of the sudden, it began to dismount itself from my computer. I am currently using Lightroom to edit my work, and when the drive would fail, Lightroom would loose the catalog. When you have 500+ images to edit and the drive dismounts every 45 minutes, this can become a huge issue.

So, I did some further research and found out that several other intel mac users are having the same issue with this product. This is very frustrating as it is advertised ‘for your mac’. Most of the other posters mentioned that the drive worked well for about a month and then started having issues.

I called WD, and their customer service department was actually very helpful. The offered to send me a new unit, even though that unit would likely have the same issue down the line. I understand that there was not much they could do for me at WD, but they were concerned and helpful just the same.

Luckily for me, the customer service dept at Amazon is rockin’ awesome and is allowing me to exchange the WD for 2 lacie units even though I am slightly past the 30 day return policy mark. While I have never had to return an item to Amazon before, I am very comforted to know that the customer service dept is really looking out for their customers.

If you are using an intel mac, I would move on from this product. It is not worth the headache. However, you can feel confident making your purchase from Amazon…

high performance, 5 year warranty, self-rebuilding raid mirror

If you want the best performance, you would want to use it as eSATA. This would mean a cardbus or expresscard eSATA adaptor on a laptop, for example. But here is the one star that I have taken off: at this price, it still does not come with an eSATA cable! It has cables for USB and the 1394, but no eSATA. I have not had the chance to test it in eSATA because of the cable. The USB2 speed is good enough for my archival application. I’ve also read around and eSATA is not faster than USB2 by much in real life (maybe 25MB/s vs 30MB/s).

The 5 year warranty is industry standard and is reassuring. And by the time it’s up, you will want a larger storage anyway. But you must keep in mind that that if the controller in the enclosure dies, your whole array dies. Hopefully the controller didn’t write bogus information into your harddrives and then hopefully WD will be able to ship you a new enclosure and you can recover that way. (This is the one weakness of having RAID 1 as the only copy. Be ware: a faulty controller can corrupt your data or even wipe your drives clean. Don’t let that be your only copy.)

Cost-wise, each of its 1TB harddrives retails at about 180 as of this writing and you still need two enclosures to mount them externally. That means you are paying 470 – 2*180 = 110 for WD’s own enclosure. It may still sound like a lot for an enclosure but the pros of this one outweight the cost and cons:

- The enclosure does RAID 1 (mirroring) in its hardware, no real cons here as long as 1TB+1TB mirroring is good enough for your application.

- Fanless: Less noise and it’s really silent, but it also runs rather warm even with air conditioning. I do note that there is a temperature sensor that will stop the drives when overheated. So there is technically no worry, unless the temperature sensor itself dies… And being fanless is what makes the 5yr warranty even better. I’ve replaced one too many fans in my enclosures. (Many fans die within 3 years…)

- Self-rebuilds: After replacing a drive, it will rebuild in several hours. Good: completely automatic. Bad: it does this offline so the data is not accessible while rebuilding.

- Green assembly: I should note that you can only use WD’s own “harddrive assembly” in this enclosure. You cannot (at least within the warranty’s limit) use your own harddrives, not even WD Green Series retail ones since they do not come with the assembly hardware. See the manual if in doubt.

In all, highly recommended if the capacity suits your need.

That’ll do pig, that’ll do (Gateway SX2800)

I bought this PC used although practically new for about 200$. The hard drive had given out on the previous owner (I don’t know specifics). I love to troubleshoot so this PC was a godsend. It’s quite sexy and the speakers are very useful for I don’t use headphones.

This PC is great, in my opinion. I have had more problems with Vista than I have had with this pc. But with the proper software updates from Microsft Update the PC is in top shape. So far, the only upgrades that went into the PC was : dedicated video card (Radeon 5570), and additional memory that I recently purchased at my local MicroCenter bringing it to it’s max capacity of 8Gigs.

I used to play World of Warcraft on this PC which kind of surprised me considering it’s small size but it handled it like a champ. Now I use it to read and watch videos from various soruces and it’s highly likely that i can have up to 20 webpages up at a time – still no problem. I occassionaly watch DVD’s as well. With the confidence I have in it I plan to start using it for .NET programming. The PC made me reconsider Gateways.

Great at first but DIED shortly after – NOT RELIABLE

At first, this computer was super fast and not bad for its price. It was working awesomely for about the first 10 months. HOWEVER, after that it started to crash. I’ve had this computer for only a year and a half and it is dieing on me! And of course, the warranty is only for 1 year, so right when my computer starts to crash, the warranty is over. This computer is not long lasting at all. Plus, the CD/DVD compartment is so poorly made. It’s almost impossible to press the button to open it. I’m having hardware problems where all the devices shut off randomly every couple of minutes. Nevertheless, the features on this computer are outstanding, but they are only good to use for about a year and half to 2 years. I would NOT recommend to buy a Gateway computer. NOT RELIABLE or LASTING AT ALL.

not great but good

I agree with the other reviewer that the DVD drive is hard to open so if u need to use it often, think twice before buying. we have owning this machine for about a year now and it has performed well, decent speed and good at muititasking, core 2 quad is a little outdated but is very powerful also its space saving design is a plus
